About the Event
For this autumn Parent Coffee Meet, we have invited Nan Liu, founder and jewelry designer of Philip & Sophia Atelier, for a relaxed and fun gemstone afternoon tea—no prior jewelry knowledge needed, just bring your curiosity! Nan holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a Master’s in Computer Science, and previously worked as a senior data scientist. After leaving the tech industry, she pivoted to jewelry design, transforming her reflections on philosophy, psychology, nature, and humanity into wearable pieces.
Nan will bring a selection of natural gemstones and jewelry creations for everyone to observe, touch, and discuss up close. Together, we’ll chat about:
• How are gemstones formed? What makes different gemstones unique?
• Color, clarity, cut, origin—what should you actually look for when appreciating jewelry?
• Why do certain gemstones and jewelry hold collectible value?
• Can jewelry be an investment? How should we view its value rationally?
• When buying jewelry, how do you find pieces that truly suit you?
• From inspiration to final design, what is the process behind a piece of jewelry?
Nan will also share her journey from tech to jewelry design, as well as Philip & Sophia Atelier’s design philosophy, Wearable Contemplation—making jewelry not just an ornament, but a way to feel, reflect, and connect with oneself.
There will be plenty of time to enjoy coffee, view the gemstones, try on jewelry, and mingle. If you find pieces you love, you are welcome to purchase them on-site.
Special thanks to Nan for her support: A portion of the proceeds from on-site jewelry sales will be donated to The Joy Culture Foundation to support TJCF’s continued mission of providing space for education, culture, and family connection in our community.
